ramps

car jumps We’ve been experimenting with ramps a lot lately.  Just about every day B sets up some kind of ramp and rolls down various things.  Here are some ideas …
  • Slide different things down the ramps – ball, cars, blocks, soft toys.  Do things roll, slide or stay put? Which things travel the furthest from the end of the ramp?  Why do some things just stop at the bottom?
  • What happens when you change the angle of the ramp? What happens when you make the ramp really steep?
  • Place some things at the bottom of the ramp as a target.  A small tower of blocks is fun.
  • Use a variety of different ramps – we’ve used the slide, a baking tray, cardboard tubes, train tracks, books, cushions and probably more.  What properties do the best ramps have? – rough or smooth? stiff or flexible?
Once your children have mastered some of the basics you might like to try playing one of the ramp strategy games at Spaghetti Box Kids.
As for the picture above … ramps were not enough and we were trying to make a jump for the cars!

We love ramps! My husband is a bit of a handyman, so he always has bits & pieces lying around that we use for ramps. My son will play for hours. Great fun!

I love this. We do a lot with slides, and we seem to have the same train set, but I like the idea of a target.
